Protopam Chloride (pralidoxime chloride) is now approved by US FDA for pediatric use of chemical poisoning treatment.

The United .States. F D A has approved new drug Protopam Chloride (pralidoxime chloride) for pediatric use .Protopam Chloride (pralidoxime chloride) is a drug which is used in the treatment of poisoning of organophosphate pesticides and chemicals (e.g., nerve agents) . US FDA approved has this drug for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injections routes of administartion.

Although the drug was in use for treatment for poisoning in pediatric patients in emergency situations even before US FDA approved this drug. Approval of this drug by US FDA will present Improved drug’s labeling with new dosing information to treat children’s, also it will provide health care professionals better guidance about better and safe usage of this drug in children’s .Proper directions in label, in an emergency situations for use of this drug in intramuscular or IV route will prove helpful to healthcare professionals.
Organophosphate pesticides OP, are esters of phosphoric acid , owing to similarity to the functional structure of acetyle choline OP block irreversibly enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in nerve cells , and this become fatal and may cause deth in severe poisoning.
OP are used in the farm as pesticides by professional exterminators.
Symptoms of OP poisoning, includes salivation a runny nose, lacrimation, vomiting, Urinary incontinence (UI) Serious symptoms OP poisoning difficulty breathing, weakness and convulsions.
When chemical poisoning is suspected, medical attention should be sought immediately and the local poison control center should be contacted by dialing 800-222-1222, nationwide.
Information about Protopam Chloride:
It is used to to treat poisoning by organophosphates or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (nerve agents), in conjunction with atropine and diazepam. Earlier in 1964 FDA approved Protopam Chloride for treating various pesticide and chemical poisoning in adults. The drug works as an antidote to pesticides and chemicals of the organophosphate class by slowing the attachment of the chemical to nerve endings, it binds enzyme enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reversibly there by reduces the effect of OP.
Protopam Chloride Adverse reactions:
Increased heart rate. Increased blood pressure, blurred vision, double vision, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, difficulty breathing.
(Pralidoxime chloride) Protopam Chloride is made by Pharmaceutical manufacturer Baxter Healthcare Corp., Deerfield, Ill.
