USFDA approves New Drug for treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection

Novel drug Rebyota for treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection

USFDA have approved first of its kind new drug for treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection. The drug is used as microbial inoculam in rectum, drug Rebyota is made from the fecal matter donated by healthy volenteers, it consists of microbial microbiota which help in supression of Clostridioides difficile bacteria. Thus protects individual from life-threatening disease. This is first of its kind novel drug approved by USFDA.

Treatment for Clostridioides difficile
Statement of Dr Peter Marks MD PhD, Director for USFDA center for biologics Evaluation and Research

Clostridioides difficile infection is a serious form of infection of colon, it causes severe inflammation of colon, resulting in diarrhea, loss of appetite, loss of body fluids, electrolyte imbalance, fever and in some cases loss to life.

Antibiotics which are used to treat bacterial infections are responsible for Clostridioides difficile infection.

Antibiotics given in treatment of other infective diseases of respiratory tract or wounds tend to act on the bacterial flora present in colon resulting in killing of all beneficial bacterial flora present in colon.
In absence of these bacterial flora Clostridioides difficile grows faster and damages mucus membrane of lower large intestine, Colon. C.diff infection is very common in patients treated with antibiotics like Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin, penicillin.

What is new drug Rebyota:
The new drug approved by USFDA consists of beneficial microbiota which help in supression of Clostridioides difficile growth and protects individual from harmful toxins produced by Clostridioides difficile. There are monoclonal antibodies available to treat C.diff which neutralise the toxins produced by Clostridioides difficile bacteria. It is manufactured and marketed by ferring pharmaceutical USA.

Causes of Clostridioides difficile infection:
Who is at risk of Clostridioides difficile infection.
1. People who get antibiotic treatment for longer period.
2. People above age 60
3. People who practice poor hand hygiene, cleaning and sanitisation of hand after toilet.
4. People living with HIV
Symptoms of Clostridioides difficile infection:

Severe abdominal cramps.
Watery Diarrhea reoccurring every 10 to 15 minutes. Fever, Tachycardia, and nausea. Some times bleeding in stool, and Increased WBC count.

Facts about Clostridioides difficile.
Almost every individual may have bacterial infection lodged in lower intestine without any symptoms, like diarrhea, fever, or colon inflammation.
When the other microbiota beneficial bacterial flora vanish due to antibiotic treatment or any other reason, then Clostridioides difficile infection becomes prominent and the toxins produced by C. diff cause inflammation and damage to mucus membrane of Colon.

Treatment for Clostridioides difficile infection.
Imidazole Group of Antibiotics:
Metronidazole 500 mg TID and Vancomycin 325 mg as required and electrolyte replenishment therapy.
Probiotics that contains Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus GG is also useful. How much time takes for showing Vancomycin difficile infection after antibiotics treatment. It takes about 4 to 10 days after antibiotic treatment patients get diarrhea which is first indication of Clostridioides difficile infection, with green colour stool.

Which are test to identify Clostridioides difficile infection test to identify Clostridioides difficile infection

Clostridioides difficile is a rod shaped gram positive anaerobic bacteria, secrete toxins which damage internal lining of large intestine. Actually it’s not the infection that is virulent but the localisation of Clostridioides difficile colonisation ( localised growth) is responsible for disease symptoms.
