HIV Rapid diagnostic test can detect HIV in 12 to 20 days of infection

New test in the diagnosis of HIV infection van detect infection within few days after infection.

Antibodies against HIV infection are the key factors in detection of HIV infection and antibodies might not be developed for next 20 days or up to next six months in an individual actually infected with HIV. This might become an important factor in deterioration of health of infected person.

Early detection of HIV infection and its treatment is key point in maintaining quality of life in HIV infected individuals, early the treatment better is the quality of life, and vice versa.

Rapid diagnostics test so far available for to the point of care use detects presence of antibodies against HIV in blood sample, sometimes in an individual who has started medication immediately after infection might not give this test positive. Some other infections might give positive results with these tests hence results are required to be verified with other confirmatory tests.

US FDA has approved new diagnostic rapid test known as The Alere Determine™ HIV 1/2 Ag/Ab Combo test kit, for to the point of care use, which can detect presence of HIV 1 antigen itself (HIV Viral particles present in blood) along with HIV 1and HIV 2 antibodies within 10 to 20 days after infection, even before antibodies appear, this will help in initiation of antiretroviral drug treatment and one can actually ensure that it do not cause AIDS a life threatening condition, to an individual infected with HIV virus. Test gives result in 20 minutes.
